3editions The New Capital

Capital FM 88.9 I had no expectations of how it would feel like to go on radio. Strangely I wasn’t even nervous when I got into the studio (As compared to my previous live TV appearance on Hello On Two which will be posted up here when I get the damn clip – It’s taking freaking forever.)

Just a couple of weeks ago we sent a press kit over to the producers of the station and within days they got back to us asking me to join them on “The Jam Break with Debs & Non” where they will do an exclusive segment on 3editions and art!

So on a cold rainy Thursday last week, I finally did my first radio interview and it actually went pretty well. The DJs Debs and Non made sure I was comfortable and wouldn’t ask questions I didn’t have answers for (Little do they know I tend to have an answer for everything, even if it didn’t make sense! Ha!). But they were great, making sure that main points about the brand and business were covered and that we got as much mileage with their listeners as possible. For 1 hour it felt like I was talking to the whole country about 3editions!

Well I don’t have the sound byte of the interview to share with you guys yet but as soon as Debs sends it to us, we will be posting it up. Stay sharp for updates.

You both are awesome!

Have a great weekend folks.

Mini Showcase

An operating studio cum gallery, though we wonder how that’s gonna work since we’re working from a 900 sqft space.

Guess we won’t call it a gallery but a mini showcase, given the “leftover space” which is suppose to be a lounge area for guests. Yes it’s all coming together nicely.

We thought it was a good idea to put some good examples of how different kinds of art would look like after printing, ranging from materials and size to types of visuals.

Various artworks hung

X-large and large sizes of various styles of art showcased on one side. We wanted to illustrate how photographs, doodle-style graphics and illustrations would look in framed art prints and canvas respectively. *Picture nice designer couches and coffee table if you feel area is too bare*

We’ve been promoting our “phonography” shots and how that would look amazing in either canvas or framed art prints. EVERYONE we know today are taking pictures with their phones and applying various filters through many great apps such as Hipstamatic, Instagram and VSCO. They’ve brought out the photographer instinct in us.

What?! Buy a printer?!

The Epson SP 9900

The Epson SP 9900

Yes, I went into this business thinking I can work with other suppliers to print our artworks and all I have to do were to shake hands with artists, promote their artworks, run a website and have a pint after work.

WRONG!!

For those of you who aren’t from Malaysia, we actually have TONS of people in the printing business here, predominantly with offset and inkjet printers, printing everything you can think of – Buntings, banners, flyers, billboards, coupons, invitation cards, name cards, stickers, fake tattoo stickers – EVERYTHING. So you really can’t blame me if I just assume that there would be someone who prints Giclée/Archival quality artworks around here.

Well there were that handful I found after googling and calling up my contacts for weeks. Naturally appointments were made and you will not believe this, but besides them being a tad arrogant, most of their quotations were all way too expensive.

“If your business is about making art more affordable and if you feel we’re too expensive, buy your own printer.”

And I did, together with the other components that were necessary (yet no one tells you about) in the printing business. I just wanted to make sure that we were doing it right.

This is what 3editions uses:

The Printer.

The Epson Stylus Pro 9900, now strengthened with 11 archival inkjet colours, represents the most advanced printing technology in this generation by combining the precision of a MicroPiezo TFP™ print head with the extraordinary performance of Epson UltraChrome® HDR inks. 11 colours in a printer just sounds awesome

The Colour Management Monitor.

Eizo ColorEdge CG series monitors offer hardware calibration which means color settings are adjusted inside the monitor so there is no displayable loss of tonalities. This produces more predictable results and ensures color display is much more uniform between ColorEdge units.

The boys thought it was a case of weapons of mass destruction

The entire process of learning the printing trade was very exciting for us. We now have new-found knowledge that would help with the business and never knew that getting your prints right could be so intricate, precise and somewhat sexy. ;)

Looking back at this, I’m glad I’ve decided to still pursue this even after knowing the level of investment involved. And learning something new can be scary at times, especially when you’re off your comfort zone. What I have really learnt is this. If you want something, like truly want something, you will break down walls and go beyond your means, and yourself to get it.

The 3editions Studio Transformation

So this is where we left off. So we decided to show you some pictures of our office studio

Once the office was up and running, you can already imagine the amount of work that came our way. From welcoming our brand new printer to sorting out stationaries, we were kept busy – Hence the perfect excuse why we haven’t updated our blog. :P

No excuses. Here’s what you’ve missed.

The Creative Spindoctor’s Space

We’re loving our space right now. It’s not too big and intimidating, yet not too small and cluttered. Kinda like what do at 3editions. We have been operating since December last year and continue to flourish with new developments with the online gallery.

Look out for more updates on our blog as we share with you our experiences with artists, artworks, critical feedback, OUR FIRST PRINT and even some silly comments we hear on a daily basis.
